After teaching online college courses for more than 10 years, plus another six years teaching in the classroom, I've come to a different conclusion.

Yes, it never hurts to be naturally smart. But the truth is that even really smart students fail classes or get poor grades. There's something else more important besides being naturally brilliant that helps students succeed.

College success is all about doing the little things and some big things that help you stand out in your class, that tell your instructor that you're serious about the course, and that you really want to learn and to do well.

In my 16 years of college teaching, I've seen how poor students find ways to do all the wrong things, while excellent students find ways to stand out and do the right things.
